3 Simple Steps for Decluttering Your SW Calgary Family Home
Decluttering your family home can seem like a huge undertaking, one that sometimes feels too daunting. However, it is also one of the first and most important steps in creating a more organized space and positive life for you and your family.
If you want to clear out your SW Calgary family home, but you don’t know where to start, here are some steps to follow:
1. Set Goals
Before you get started with decluttering, it’s important to make a plan. No matter how many rooms or clutter you have to get through, starting with specific goals will help reduce any frustration during the process.
Here are some things to keep in mind as you get started:
- Write down a list of all the rooms and clutter ‘hot spots’ you want to tackle.
- Give each space a grade based on the severity of the clutter. This will help prioritize your time.
- Do one room or one space at a time.
- Set deadlines for each phase of your clean up. Ensure these dates are attainable so you don’t get frustrated.
- Plan time to work on specific areas when you expect decluttering in those spaces to take more than a few hours, such as your garage or basement.
2. Create a Sorting System
As you go through your rooms, you’ll need a system for sorting the items you find. You can create your own method, or use one of the most popular organizational tips: The 3 Box Method.
This method will force you to decide what to do with each item. Your options are as follows:
- Keep: Items you decide to keep should go neatly into their designated spaces. Store them in a container or drawer and make sure to label them.
- Throw Away: This includes any items you want to throw away, give away, or sell. Consider storing them temporarily in your garage or attic.
- Storage: When you are putting items away for storage, make sure to put an inventory list in alongside with them. Then transport them immediately to your storage area.
3. Get Rid of the Clutter
For the items you have put in the ‘throw away’ box, you have a few options when it comes to disposing of them. You could:
- Recycle them
- Donate or freecycle
- Have a garage sale
- Rent a dumpster
Make Some Money from Your Decluttering Process
If you are up to the task, you may be able to make some money out of your decluttering by having a garage sale. Check to see if your neighbourhood or homeowner’s association has a designated garage sale date. Just begin your decluttering early enough so you can participate.
