5 Simple Tips for Unpacking in Your New Home
The movers are gone and all your boxes and possessions are scattered about your beautiful new home. It sure looks a little different than it did when you did your final walkthrough. You might be thinking to yourself, "How will I ever get all of this unpacked and organized while wrangling the kids and keeping up with my everyday obligations?"
Fortunately, there is a way to tackle this challenge in an efficient and quick way. So long as you follow the five tips and tricks below.
1. Unpack your kids' bedrooms first: Deciding which room to unpack first is usually the hardest part of moving into a new home. We recommend setting up your kids' bedrooms first as moving to a new place can be stressful for them. By providing them with a sense of normalcy and their old surroundings, you will make things easier on them as they transition to living in a new space. If you have a newborn, you will definitely want to set up all the essentials in their nursery. This will make your life a lot less hectic as you navigate this fun yet stressful period.
2. Get your electronics and cords in order: It's incredible how quickly cords can turn into a rat's nest. To stop this from happening and to save you some frustration later on, make sure you take care of your electronics and their accompanying cords shortly after moving into your new home. The best way to make this task easy starts before you pack. Grab some plastic bags and put the cables to each electronic in them with the bag clearly labelled with what it belongs to. Another low-cost trick to keep your cords from tangling with one another involves using your old paper towel tubes and putting the cables in them. It may look a little weird when unpacking, but it will save you from a massive headache later on.
3. Designate a linen closet right away: You don't want to overlook your towels or bedsheets upon moving into your new home. They may not seem very important but quickly will once you have nothing to dry off with after a shower. These items can also get misplaced and lost quite easily amongst the rest of your things. After taking care of the first two items on the list, find a closet where you can store all these important fabrics, and if space is an issue, be sure to roll up your towels to create a little more room.
4. Get your kitchen set up: You and your family will need to eat, right? While takeout is a fantastic option for your first few nights in your new home to make things a little less stressful, it will quickly add up. Be sure to unpack all your important and essential appliances and kitchen items right away, including your dishes and cookware. Try to put the items you regularly use in easy to reach places, while things that are more decorative or seldom used can be tucked away in the back of cabinets.
5. Put your attention on the entryway: This part of your new home is often overlooked for how important it is. Considering it's the first and last thing your visitors and guests will see of your beautiful new home, it makes sense to tidy it up and get things organized here right away. Otherwise, it may soon be overrun by hats, jackets, and shoes. One tip that can help manage this space is the use of hooks. And plenty of them. You may also want to pick up a basket or plastic boot tray for you and your family's shoes to help keep your brand new floor looking pristine.
