Positive Parenting and COVID-19: 6 Tips to Keep Your Family Calm and Happy During This Time

With schools closing and many parents working at home and facing job uncertainty, it’s more important than ever to use positive parenting and healthy approaches to discipline. Some examples of how to keep your children calm and happy during this time include:

  1. Prevent boredom: Bored children are more likely to act out. While your children have had their lives disrupted and they can’t play with their friends, there are ways you can keep them busy and preoccupied, using a healthy and productive schedule at home.
  2. Talk about your child’s feelings. Children who are old enough to follow the news may be feeling afraid or anxious about the COVID-19 situation. Make sure to give your child space to talk about their fears, and offer comfort and honesty.
  3. Help your teen feel connected: Teens especially need to be able to connect with their friends. Help them connect through social media and other safe distancing ways.
  4. Spend quality time together. You should set aside some time each day to spend quality time with your child, and ask them what they want to do. This could include reading a book, looking at pictures, going for a walk, or even doing a chore together.
  5. Keep it positive. Make sure to use positive language and praise your child/teenager for something they have done well. This will help reassure your children that you notice what they are doing and you care about them.
  6. Take a walk. Being outside in the fresh air is important for your family’s mental and physical well-being. So why not take a walk in the nearby park or go for a jog? Just make sure to stay away from the playground equipment and keep at least 2 metres away from other people.
